Expert Advice
10 Proven Tips to Score High
Master the Time-Locked Section Format
Each section is only 18 minutes. Practice answering 20 MCQs in 18 min from Week 2. In the real exam, never spend more than 54 seconds per question.
Prioritise High-Yield Topics First
Anatomy, Optics, Refractive Errors, Glaucoma and Cataract together contribute nearly 40% of domain MCQs in government optometrist exams. Master these before anything else.
Use the 80/20 Revision Rule
Spend 80% of your revision time on topics where you score below 50% in mock tests. Improving weak areas boosts your total score far more than polishing strong ones.
Solve PYQs Before Theory is Complete
Previous Year Questions reveal exactly what type of questions are asked. Solving PYQs early will guide your theory study — you will know what depth is actually needed.
Build a Formula & Fact Sheet
Optical formulae (vergence, magnification, prism power), key diagnostic values (IOP, visual acuity cutoffs, WHO blindness criteria) — make a 2-page cheat sheet and revise daily.
Never Attempt Completely Unknown MCQs
With −1 marking, a random guess on 10 unknown questions can cost you 10 marks. Only attempt if you can eliminate at least 2 options confidently.
Analyse Mock Tests Deeply — Not Just Scores
After every mock, spend at least 30 minutes analysing wrong answers. Understanding why you got it wrong is 10x more valuable than solving another 50 questions.
Group Topics for Better Retention
Study Glaucoma → IOP → Tonometry → Gonioscopy together as a cluster. Connected learning creates stronger memory links than studying topics in isolation.
Treat GK & Computer as Your Bonus Zone
Most domain candidates neglect these 20 marks. Spend just 30 minutes daily here and score 16–18/20. In a highly competitive exam, these marks can be the difference between selection and rejection.
Stay Consistent Over Intense
A steady 8–9 hours of focused study daily for 30 days is far more effective than 14-hour burnout days. Consistency wins over intensity every single time.
